There are two semesters that are open to international
students for admissions in Australia. The fall and the
spring seasons. If a student is targeting the fall semester,
he will have to start the process of applying at least
a year before admission date. This is applicable to
the spring semester too.
Do Indian students
get scholarships to study in Australia?
There are many scholarships and fellowships available
to international students. For example the Australian

Overseas Postgraduate Research Scholarships (all Universities),
Australian Research Fellowships, Queen Elizabeth II

these Scholarships cover (a) full tuition fees; (b)
economy class airfare (Both ways) to Australia and back;
(c) Living allowance to cover housing and food for the
duration of the scholarships (this is also payable during
semester and annual break).
Can overseas relatives
sponsor one’s studies in Australia?

What is the time
period given to a student to complete his course?
The student is expected to finish with the course within
the stipulated period of time. Any extension will have
to be done in sync with the department the student is
part of.
What is the cost
of studying and living in Australia?
The cost of studying varies from course to course ranging
from A$12,000 to A$18,000.The cost of living ranges
from A$10,000 to A$12,000 per year. The cost of studying
in Australia compares favorably with other destination
countries for international students. A recent Australian
Government study found that in terms of total costs
(which include tuition fees and living expenses) the
US and UK is consistently more expensive than Australia.

with laws relating to the approval and registration
of courses they wish to offer to international students.
Many Australian private institutions are members of
Tuition Assurance Schemes which ensures that the student

How are Australian
institutions ranked?
Australian institutions are not officially ranked. However,
there are some commercial publications available that
compare achievements of universities and institutions
in meeting certain criteria such as use of technology
or student support services.
All of Australia's education and training institutions
offer high quality, internationally relevant courses
because Australian Government legislation requires them
to be registered and meet quality assurance measures.
Excellence in teaching, research, facilities and support
services is found across Australia's diversified education
and training system. Prospective students should focus
on finding institutions that offer the course most suited
to their particular needs and aspirations.
Can I study for
an Australian qualification by distance or on-line?
Distance education courses are offered by Australian
universities and vocational and technical education
institutions. You will need to check directly with the
institution about what courses are offered in distance
mode.
Do Australian
universities undertake research?
Australian universities have a very important role in
research and development, accounting for about one-quarter
of Australia's research and development activity and
60 per cent of Australia's basic research effort. There

What are the documents
the student needs to have when he applies for a visa?
1. Application Documents
- A fully completed and signed Application for a Student
(Temporary) Visa – Form 157A
- Visa application charge, payable in USD cash (or the
receipt showing the payment has been made in
Australia).
- A letter from the Australian institution, offering
the student a place in your proposed course of study.
- Four recent passport photographs and any other family
members included in the application.
- A current passport or certified copies of all the
pages of the current passport, for all persons included
in
the application.
If represented by an agent or lawyer,
- Written authorization from the student for the visa
office to deal with that person on matters relating
to
the Student (Temporary) visa application.
- A statement of the purpose explaining the student’s
intentions at the completion of the course in
Australia.
- Any other documentation that the student believes
will assist in the assessment of his application.
2. Education Documents
Clear copies of the student highest formal academic
qualifications and documents that show his current academic
level; and the student’s original school reports
or academic transcript. If the student is currently
studying, a letter from his institution confirming his
student status.
If the student have studied English previously, please
provide evidence of this and copies of the highest qualification
or results gained. If he has sat for TOEFL or IELTS
language test recently, the student should provide the
original certificate showing his current score.
3. Financial Evidence
Evidence of the student ability to financially support
himself and members of his family unit included in his
application for the duration of his course in Australia.
This may include (but is not limited to): Evidence of
all sources of income, for example, business interests,
share portfolios etc. This may include income tax assessment
documentation, business license's) or evidence of business
activity. This information must clearly demonstrate
the earnings received.
Other evidence of access to sufficient funds that the
student believe will assist the decision-maker.
How should the
visa fee be paid?
this non-refundable visa application charge in the form
of a bank draft in Indian rupees payable to either the
Australian High Commission, New Delhi or the Australian
Consulate General, Mumbai depending on where the student
intend to make his application.
What is the pre-visa
assessment? Do Indian students fall under this category?
The Australian Government has upgraded India to the
assessment level '3' from the earlier level '4' for
grant of visas effective from November 2001. Countries
that fall under this category require students to go
through the pre-visa assessment. Therefore this is applicable
for Indian students who desire to pursue a degree in
Australia. They are will be assessed to see if they
are entering Australia for the purpose of study and
will not contravene visa conditions and become an unlawful
non-citizen. To be granted a student visa, the student
must provide evidence that satisfies the assessment
factors applicable to him. Assessment factors include
the Evidence of Enrolment, financial ability, English
proficiency, and likely compliance with the conditions
of his visa and any other matters relevant to assessing
his application. This is verified by the advice of acceptance
from the Australian institution (commonly known as Letter
of Offer), which is issued to a student who has been
offered enrolment in a full-time course. A student should
not pay any part of the course tuition fee prior to
the outcome of the PVA.
What is the time
taken to process the application?
Student applicants should lodge applications no more
than 3 months and at least 8 weeks before course commencement
dates. Some applications take longer to process. Students
may be asked to undertake further medical tests and
some delays may be experienced due to the need to verify
bank or education documents.
Should a student
take health insurance?
Yes, any international student immaterial of which country
he plans to pursue his higher studies in should take
a health insurance in his name.
