India, UK to sign pacts; tie-up with Imperial College likely
London: In an ambitious effort to increase the number of institutes of excellence as well as upgrade their standards, India will sign five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with United Kingdom higher education entities on Wednesday during HRD Minister Kapil Sibal’s London visit, according to a top British government source.
The co-operation will include a tie-up with Imperial College, a science-based establishment and the world’s fifth-ranked university. Imperial College is already helping to set up an Indian Institute of Technology at Ropar.
The signing of MoUs to be witnessed by Sibal and Lord Peter Mandelson, British secretary of state for business, innovation and skills, will follow a roundtable with 17 vice-chancellors or senior representatives of British universities, including Cambridge. Sibal and Pat McFadden, British minister for business, innovation & skills, will also issue a joint statement on Wednesday.
