For UK student
visa, onus now on sponsor
London: British business, innovation & skills
minister Pat McFadden on Thursday said that his
country was planning to tighten immigration rules
for students, which is also likely to affect the
Indian applicants.
McFadden confirmed that the issue arose during his two-hour
meeting on education collaboration with HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday.
Sibal is on a four-day visit to Britain. McFadden said the British home office
will create a category of a ‘‘highly trusted sponsor’’ and
place the onus on this person to ensure that student visas aren’t abused
and not used purely for immigration purposes.
Sibal was unavailable for a reaction. The Indian High Commission
has also been uncommunicative on the minister’s tour. McFadden said that
his department would also crack down on bogus colleges. A section of immigration
seekers from India obtain admission into these fly-by-night places and then disappear
into Asian ghettos, where they work illegally before resurfacing years later
in an attempt to regularise their stay.
A recent investigation by a British newspaper revealed that
people involved in immigration rackets in the UK have been transferring money
into bank accounts of applicants in Punjab so that they could demonstrate an
impressive balance at the time of approaching British visa authorities in Delhi.
Proof of sufficient funds is a prerequisite for further processing. |
