Southampton varsity launches actuarial science programme for Indian students

UK-based University of Southampton has launched post graduate programmes in Actuarial Science for Indian students to attract and encourage students wishing to take up actuarial studies. Actuaries are highly-skilled quantitative professionals who are primarily concerned with the identification, quantification, analysis and management of various types of risk, particularly those with long-term financial consequences.

“There is a strong global demand for actuaries especially in India with the recent de-regulation and growing internationalisation of insurance and related industries,” said Sujit Sahu from University of Southampton, School of Mathematics and Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute who is visiting India.

Both the nine-month diploma programme and the two year masters degree course will be held in Southampton. To help with the cost of studies, the School of Mathematics will provide a £2,000 scholarship to any international student with a first class or equivalent honours degree. Moreover, Indian students will get a further benefit of £1,000. The cost of the programme is around £9,660 and the Indian students who get selected will pay £6,660.

Though the varsity has no plans to join with any Indian institute, Sahu plans a variety of scholarships for international undergraduate students. “We have no plan to join with any Indian institute but we are in talks with Amity University for a joint programme but the negotiations are still on,” said Sahu.
